Fars, as the fourth largest province of Iran, is located in the south of the country. Fars is the land of culture, poetry and spring oranges.

History

Fars, since the eleventh century BC, has been the residence of one of the Aryan tribes, named "Pers". The name of this province and the Persian Gulf, which was cut off from Fars province in the country divisions in 1352 AH and belonged to Bushehr province, is derived from the name of this tribe.

Geography

Fars province is centered on the city of Shiraz and is limited to Isfahan from the north, Yazd from the east, Hormozgan from the south, and Kohgilouye and Bushehr from the west. This region has plains and deserts, lakes, mountains, valleys and gorges, many rivers and springs, and mountainous areas have 70% of the area of this province.

According to the latest country divisions in 2013, this province has 29 counties. According to the census of 2015, Shiraz, Maroodasht, Kazeroon, Jahorm, Larestan and Fasa are respectively the most populous cities of Fars province.

Fars province has ancient cities, historical monuments, natural sights, places of pilgrimage and beautiful Iranian gardens that cover different tastes.

Shiraz

Shiraz is the capital of Fars province and has been famous for having beautiful gardens since ancient times. Some of its gardens have historical importance and are considered important tourist centers. Eram Garden, Afifabad Garden, Delgosha Garden and Jahannama Garden are among them.

The presence of two great Persian poets, Hafez and Saadi in Shiraz, has influenced various cultural and linguistic aspects of the people of this city, and today the tombs of these two poets are considered important tourist attractions of the city. Khajovi Kermani Mausoleum, Karim Khan Zand Citadel, Nasir al-Molk Mosque and Narenjestan Qavam Garden are some other historical monuments of Shiraz.

In the hot summers of Shiraz, the village of Qalat near this city is a resort for Shirazites and travelers.

According to traditions, during Mamun's caliphate, a number of descendants of Imam Musa bin Jafar took refuge in Shiraz and died there. There are many tombs of Imamzadehs belonging to the same generation in this city, and today, Shahcheragh Shrine and Imamzadeh Ali Bin Hamzah are among the important places of pilgrimage in this city.

Pasargad

Pasargad city includes "Pasargad World Heritage Collection", a collection of structures left from the Achaemenid era. This city is the first Achaemenid capital and is located in a high plain and surrounded by mountains.

The most prominent part of the Pasargad complex is the tomb of Cyrus. Kambojie Mausoleum, Pasargad Mosque, Teltakht defensive fortifications, petroglyphs of winged man, Shahi Garden fountains, General Bar Palace, Kingdom Complex, Holy Precinct, Bolaghi Gorge, Mozafari Caravanserai, Gate Palace and Stone Tower are among the other works of this collection.

Marvdasht

Maroodasht city is located 40 kilometers north of Shiraz and has a mountainous and moderate climate. This city is now the second largest city in Fars province after Shiraz.

Naqsh Rajab, Ashtrak city, Khan bridge, three domes and Amir band bridge are other historical monuments of Marvdasht. The Kir River, which flows from the Bakhtegan Lake and passes through the south of Morodasht, as well as the Darudzen Dam Lake, have provided resorts with good weather for tourists.

Kazerun

Kazerun city is the center of Kazerun county and it has always attracted the attention of tourists due to its many historical and ancient monuments.

Most of the historical works of this city belong to the Sasanian period. The ancient city of Bishapur, located in the center of Kazerun, was built during the Sassanid era, and its remains have been registered as part of the Sassanid axis of Fars by UNESCO. Bishapur is a treasure of Sassanid era works such as Anahita Temple and the statue of Shapur I located in the Shapur Cave.

Larestan

Larestan city, centered on Lar city, is one of the historical cities of Fars province, which was a vast land in the Zandiyeh and Qajar periods. Most of the people of this city speak Larestani, which is a branch of the ancient Pahlavi language.

There are many salt domes in this area, which have increased in height over time due to salt deposits, and they are considered one of the most important tourist attractions of this city.

Sarvestan

Sasan Palace, Sheikh Yusuf Sarvostani's tomb, Imamzade Bibi Sharifa Khatun, and Angur Gebri Castle are among the historical monuments of this region. Maharlu Lake is the most important natural attraction of this city. Cheshm Saru Nakhodi in Nazarabad and Rabat Garden in Sarvostan are also considered as other natural monuments of the region. Its famous products include buttermilk, pistachios and olives.

Firouzabad

Firouzabad city, centered in Firouzabad city, was one of the important cities of the Sassanid period. This area has many historical monuments from the early Sassanid period, the remains of Ardeshir Babkan Palace, Dokhtar Castle, Milo Minar and the relief of Ardeshir's victory are among them. This city is the connection between Asalouye port and Shiraz.

Jahrom

Jahrom is one of the old cities of Iran. Jahrom Fire Temple, Jahrom Bazaar, Sengtrashan Cave, Khan's Mosque and Madrasah, and Tofan House are among the historical monuments of this region. Stonemasons Cave is one of the largest man-made caves in the world.

Darab

Darab city is located in the southeast of Fars province with a delay of several thousand years. The historical monument of Darabgerd belongs to the Achaemenid period in this city. Azarakhsh Fire Temple, Naqsh Shapur, Azarjoy Fire Temple and Bahram Palace are other historical monuments of this region. Among the other tourist attractions of Darab, we can mention the Raghaz Strait, which is surrounded by high walls on both sides and many waterfalls flow in it. Exploring the valley requires equipment and a guide and takes a full day.
